MOVE & update

Yo!

So I submitted my thesis, packed up some stuff and left Cambridge, after a decade of hanging out up there. I will be returning to Cambridge at some point in January for a week to finalise my move and pack everything else I left up there, so if you're wanting to confess your true love to me or whatever, you only have that one chance. Crucial 'Zine will be continuing operations in ATHENS. I'm going to try to sort out a P.O. box, so please DON'T send anything to the Cambridge address.

Anyway, the new shirts are almost gone. I've got a few left in black, sizes Medium to XL, so if you want one, get in touch before those disappear. Don't know if I print up any more again because it's a fucking nightmare trying to sell them when most people seem to like the idea of them, don't bother contacting me about their sizes/colours and then expect I will have that shit ready for them.

Also, issue #7 will hopefully be ready by the end of the month, so long as I can get my head around everything and stuff. Unfortunately Panx Romana had to postpone their interview, so that might be in a later issue.

THIS WEEKEND!

Yo! We all know that Jesus was as real as Ronald McDonald, but if celebrating his even-more fictional birthday gets me a few days off to party and eat lots of food, fuck it, why not? Make sure you get your ass down to these two very special shows and support your local bands and promoters:

SATURDAY!

REBELATION are seriously sweet. Hopefully they'll bring down the entire crew and there'll be like a billion trumpets and bongos. Can't argue with any of the other support bands either.
Inter City Crazy Train were totally sweet at the Random Hand show, last time I saw them.
The Sterilisers I'm sure I've seen before when drunk at the Moon and gone 'this is pretty cool'.
Tommy Pirate is always cool to catch before you get mad drunk, because members of the Tagnuts will usually heckle him about being in Edelweiss Pirates.
Everybody who is awesome will be there, so don't miss out.

Then on SUNDAY D.S. from Ababoonsass has sorted out...

HARD SKIN!
ABOVE THEM!
FIVE SHITTY FINGERS!
TWO PEAS IN A POD!

SUNDAY 19th of DECEMBER
PORTLAND ARMS
CAMBRIDGE
£7 IN

Hard Skin are to Oi! what Good Clean Fun are to youth crew. Dust off your boots, braces and cult lower division football team jersey and shave your head!
Above Them I don't really have a clue, but they are probably alright, I trust D.S's judgement.
Five Shitty Fingers is Duncan from Snuff (and a billion other bands) doing some sort of acoustic folk stuff. I saw a video on youtube and everybody on-stage was dressed like pirates.
Two Peas In A Pod are two dudes from Vanilla Pod doing some acoustic stuff. Will they do 'Once Was Home' and will it rock as hard? I'd like to find out.

Brewer is exceptionally happy about Hard Skin, so if you're tall, stand in front of him so he can't see the band. If Hard Skin cover 'Oi! to the world' by the Vandals (which every band should do around Xmas), I will be moshing hard.
-------------

In other exciting news the new CRUCIAL 'ZINE shirts look totally fucking sweet. Pictures will be up as soon as I get batteries for my camera. For anybody who didn't preorder one, I've got a few spares in black and navy blue (sizes S-XL), but get in touch fast, because people are already claiming them. £6 a pop (plus postage). I'm going to Greece early next week for like a month, so don't sleep on this too long.

Also the new issue is coming along nicely. Unfortunately there have been some minor setbacks with the zine and life in general, so issue #7 won't be out until mid/late January. Don't worry though, I will make sure it is EXTRA good, so there will be a higher quota of awesomeness in it than usual, you know, for a change.

Also, there are NEW rates for advertising, should any record label, distro, store, mercenary or super villain wanting to pimp their wares in the upcoming issue. £10 for 1/4 page, £20 for half a page and £30 for a full page. Hell, I'll gladly take money from racist, sexist and homophobic folk, print their ads under the heading 'How to demonstrate your severe retardation at the expense of natural resources' and spend the loot on something cool. Money generated from ads will go towards our War on Boredom but crucially, keeping the 'zine free.

NEWS UPDATE

Yo! How's tricks? Here's the latest bits of news:

- CRUCIAL 'ZINE #7 is coming together nicely. It will be the final issue based in Cambridge, as I'll be moving back to Greece in January/February. Hopefully it will be out in time for the Hard Skin gig at the Portland Arms on the 17th of December. There should be some pretty sweet covers (yes, that's plural) and wicked interviews. Can't really let anything out of the bag just yet, but it will be sweet.

- Shirts have been ordered. Thanks to everyone who expressed an interest, I'll get in touch with you as soon as I get them. For anyone else who might want one, I have ordered a few extras in Black and Navy Blue. Speaking of random merch, I've also got a few patches printed up by the cool people at Ska Mutiny Records. I've given a few out, will probably stick the rest up for sale. £1 sounds alright, yeah?

- NASA astrobiologists have discovered a bacterium which uses arsenic instead of phosphorus as its building blocks. I aksed Crucial 'Zine's resident organic chemist about what this actually means:

"Thats the equivalent of the theoretical silicon based life form. Like carbon and silicon; arsenic has the same valency as phosphorus so can bond in the same way but is much 'larger' by which I mean its valence electrons are much further from its positively charged nucleus so any bonds it forms would be significantly weaker (I think. Fuck. I'm losing it), but that is besides the point. That's pretty immense. I'm assuming they believe it has simply adapted from an existing phosphorus utilising lifeform due to a constraining environment? If it just adapted for a laugh...that would be taking the piss. "

More news soon!

Shirt reminder

Hi there!

There seem to be like a dozen people who'd like a new Crucial 'Zine shirt, so it seems more than likely that I'll get a new batch printed. The design is http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/1134/shirttarrot1.png

I want to print them with GOLD ink, on RED and PURPLE (for the guys) and CHERRY RED and NAVY BLUE (for the girls), so they will look a bit like this, according to my photoshop wizardry:

http://img541.imageshack.us/i/shirtred.png
http://img829.imageshack.us/i/shirtpurple.png

(I can't quite get 'gold' in the palette and used yellow for the print instead, but use your imagination a bit and it's not too far off)

Like the last ones, they will be printed on Gildans Heavy (in guy sizes) and Gildans SoftStyle (in girl sizes), in case you are curious about the sizes/fit and will cost £6. They are known to make you look about 40% more attractive than the average Hollywood star, particularly when you're losing your mind in some epic mosh to a Floorpunch cover.

If you would like a DIFFERENT coloured shirt, that should be fine let me know and I will forward you a chart of what's available, but bear in mind that the print WILL be in gold ink (it costs me extra to change it), so please don't ask for a different ink colour.

Anyway, if you want one, send me a message (via Facebook or Myspace) with your shirt size and colour and I'll make a note of it. Ideally I'll get these printed in November, so get in touch soon! I can either meet up with you locally when they are ready, or mail yours out to you.

Issue #7!

Hi there everyone! Issue #6 has been out for a couple and so far, the response has been positive. Actually, there were a couple valid points about some of the content, but you can probably read about that in the next issue. A dark sense of humour and out of context comments can give people the wrong impression, but whatever.

Anyway, I'm starting to get some ideas rolling for issue 7. I'd like to have this one ready for early/mid December 2010, and this time I want to keep this promise. This will also be the final Cambridge-based issue, so I am hoping it will be the best one so far. I'm submitting my research degree in December and after that I will be moving back to the land of souvlaki and frappé, in a strategic move to bring Crucial 'Zine nearer to the birthplace of Western Civilisation and taint it all. Swish huh?

So basically if you'd like to contribute something for the next issue, whether it's interviews, ranting, reviews, pretty/fucked up drawings, pictures of cool shows/kids moshing or skating, your non-vegan and seriously bacon-focused recipes, the deadline is 15th of November. That gives me enough time to slap together layouts and avoid having my head explode when I should be worrying about wordcounts and references. I wanted to have a load of different covers for issue #6 (because I am still a comic book geek), like one for every 100 copies, but that failed for a bunch of reasons (mostly me not chasing up artists enough), so if you think you've got some mad skills with a pen or whatever, I'd especially be interested and give this another shot. If you're the sort of chatty person who doesn't mind taping random conversations with cool bands when you're drunk, I'd also appreciate interviews. Reviews are always welcome too, but if you're going to write about how awesome your mate's Rancid/'generic emo'/indie/trendy 'fusion'-like band is, I will tell you to fuck off (fuck off). Write about demos or records you got given/bought at a show and tell me how awesome or horrible they were. But yeah, I'm all ears.

If you are interested in getting your ideas out to 500 people all over the world, get in touch with me and we can brainstorm. The best way to do that is to either send a message through myspace or facebook, or if you're local, you can shout at me when you see me down the pub or a gig.

In the meantime, make sure you get the new Punch or Coke Bust record on your prefered media player device and take it easy.

Χμ... Πάλι καλά.

So, no new Seaquest DSV down the line, eh?

I was not aware that Roy Scheider died a couple years ago, so this is pretty late. Anyway, play this game in his memory because Martin Brody really loved the shark and this is how he'd want it to be. The next Jaws movie should be based on this. I managed to drag a Concorde and a Stealth Bomber into the sea.

Delays, Changes, Breakdowns

Ahoy hoy! 2010 is here! Yay. Got drunk? I didn't. Nevermind.

Issue 5 has been delayed until end of January time due to totally forseeable events and acts of Gods. I've been sent a ton of records I don't have to buy to review (for a change), so I'd like to get it all in this new issue. I've also decided to take some of my free time that I usually allocate to zinecrafting in order to be all depressed and pissed off at the world, you know, to do the whole punk rock nihilism thing. It's working out great.

Anyway, bullshit aside, the race is to have the new issue ready by the SUPER AWESOME gig we are co-promoting with Last Gang In Town for the 6th of February down the Man On The Moon. If you haven't heard, confirmed bands include RANDOM HAND, MOUTHWASH, THE SKINTS and CHRIS MURRAY (with some of his FRIENDS). We'll see about getting some more bands on that bill because a gig at the Man On The Moon without a local band is like sex without a penis/phallic symbol. It just doesn't happen. It will be pretty sweet and we'll have a few surprises for everyone who comes down. Bring your mosh gloves. If you DON'T come down to this show, you might as well cut your (or partner's) dick off. Dom is going to be crucialising in Australia for like a year or so, so come down and get that boy mad drunk, before he sets off for Erinsborough to grind curbs and drink beers.

In case I didn't mention this the new issue will have interviews with NEW TOWN KINGS, YOUTH OF TOGAY, THE TAGNUTS and THE TERRORS. No word from Vanilla Pod, so maybe that will go in the issue after this one. There's some more funny and not-so-funny stuff in it, like how to make a 'zine, what music to listen to and even more reasons why metal is utter crap (except grind/gore and DragonForce, obviously)

We are also down with the idea of getting some shirts or something printed up for it. If you're all artistic and stuff, make up a crucial design and get in touch with us. Don't get too artistic though, because we are going to do these on the cheap, which means a one-colour design. I like the idea of getting a gold print on purple shirts, but obviously that's up for talks.

In the meantime I feel it's my duty to inform everyone that the weather in Athens is super-awesome. It was 25 on New Years and today I almost felt cold enough to have to wear a jumper when I was out hanging in a park downtown. Almost.

- Mr. 5000
